‘Let me alone,’ said Mildred. ‘I didn’t do anything.’ ‘Let you alone! That’s all very well, but how can I leave myself alone? We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?’
-Mildred and Montag, Fahrenheit 451
How long has it been since you were really bothered? About something important?
How long has it been since I couldn’t fall asleep at night because of a problem somebody else was going through?
How long has it been since my mind couldn’t stop thinking about the homeless, and how desperate their situation is? Or about starving, sick people across the world?
How long has it been since I was really truly bothered by a negative character trait in myself – selfishness, vanity, an uncaring attitude?
It’s been a long time….
At least I’m starting to be bothered that I’m not bothered by these things anymore. Maybe that’s a start.
